Knowing when you need new guillotine blades

One of the biggest mistakes we encounter for guillotine users is not knowing when the blades need replacing.

The majority of operators will continue to cut until they experience problems and then decide the time is right for a new guillotine blade. The paper guillotines of today are extremely strong and will cut through a stack of paper with even a very dull knife.

What the operators do not realise is the amount of wear and tear this puts on the guillotine, leading to premature and expensive damage to the machine plus poor cutting quality.

If you are a first-time user don’t worry, as we have put together this handy guide so you know when it’s time for a new blade.

Telltale signs you need new guillotine blades

If your guillotine is struggling to cut a 1mm off-cut cleanly and the off-cuts are clumping together in 2’s, 3’s and 4’s, then your knife/blade is not cutting cleanly through the paper stack. This is a sure sign of a dull knife/blade that will need replacing or sharpening.

Guillotine knives can be re-sharpened multiple times over, plus re-sharpening is relatively cheap and is often cheaper than replacing the guillotine.

The simple practice of keeping a guillotine blade/knife sharp will ensure it keeps running smoothly. Just remember to keep a spare sharp blade around for the time its needed.
